As our many loyal guests and travel partners know, Shangri La Caribe was purchased in December, 2008. From the beginning, it was known that a new name would need to be selected for this very special resort, rich in history and memories. Early on, the new owners, managers and associates began searching for and speaking to our guests about names that might properly convey the nearly unexplainable feeling one experiences vacationing with us.  The word “magical” surfaced over and over.  To be in harmony with this beautiful Mayan region, we chose the name MAHÉKAL, which is the Spanish pronunciation for Magical.  Over the last year, our staff has been working to completely refresh the resort’s rooms and making improvements that will pleasantly surprise you.  We have taken great care to retain the resort’s genuinely warm and gracious staff and to maintain the soul of one of the Riviera Maya’s last truly authentic beachfront palapa-roofed resorts. Providing the perfect getaway since 1982, our resort has welcomed many guests to this unique 3+ to 4 star hotel, with thatched roof palapas and spacious, oversized rooms with their own private terraces or balconies. The resort is located beachfront on the Caribbean with a wonderful white sand beach on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, yet still convenient to the shops and restaurants of 5th Avenue, or La Quinta as it is known locally.

MAHÉKAL BEACH RESORT has held on to its natural legacy of sea and jungle, and offers a vast array of treasures and amenities to guests looking for secluded Playa del Carmen accommodations. The hotel operates under a modified American plan (MAP) which includes breakfast and dinner, or lunch daily.
